Margaret Olsen is a Low Country naturalist who creatively expresses herself best
as a potter by incorporating images of Coastal marine wildlife. She is a former
marine science teacher at Woodward Academy in the Atlanta area. Now she
continues to indulge her love of the ocean and marine life as the Educational
Specialist for the Southeast Center for Ocean Sciences Education Excellence, and
adjunct educational forum of the University of Georgia. Together "Margo" and her
husband Mickey have five children and three gorgeous granddaughters.
Margaret's pottery career began in 1996 under the tutelage of Debbie Craig
during her summer visits to St. Simons Island. Development and refinement of her
unique style continues under Jim Webeber of "Clay Shapers" in Griffin, Georgia.
Her style known in the craft as hand built, reflects her innate desire to
be "hands-on" and totally involved with her clay medium. Margo hand shapes her
pieces rather than relying on a "wheel" for the formation of her product's
shape. This style permits almost unlimited creative freedom. "I can build
anything that a wheel potter can throw and more" she says.
Olsen
builds bowls, platters, dinner plates, baking and serving dishes and bowls of
all shapes and sizes, bird feeders, egg platters, vases, soap dishes, tiles,
mirrors, wall hangings and jewelry pendants. The marine theme appears throughout
all her pieces which are unique in style, shape and color. Private commissions
keep her busy as well as supplying pieces to several local shops. Margaret will
soon open a studio in McIntosh County and also teach some classes.
